39 million trips a month, holding steady.

Public transport logged 39.5 million trips in August 2026 — every LRT, MRT, monorail, KTM and Rapid bus service in the official daily feed, summed for the month, -1.5% on a year earlier. The chapter reads the feed live and computes everything on this page from it.

Official latestDaily official data, published in arrears — the feed currently runs to 31 August 2026 (data as of 2026-08-31 23:59), so the latest complete month is August 2026. And it counts trips, not people: one person transferring between lines is counted once per service boarded.

Daily trips per service since 1 January 2019, aggregated to monthly sums on this page. Ridership counts trips, not unique people — one person transferring between lines is counted once per service boarded. Data as of 2026-08-31 23:59; a null means a service was not yet reporting, and is never treated as zero.

The long view

02

The collapse is on the chart. So is the comeback.

In April 2020, every service in this feed together logged 1.3 million trips — the floor of the whole record. August 2026 sits 31 times higher, at 39.5 million.

Read the shape honestly: part of the rise since April 2020 is recovery, and part is coverage — 9 of the 13 services only begin reporting after the series starts, so later months sum more columns than early ones. The per-service table below keeps those two stories separate.

All 13 services in the ridership_headline feed, August 2026. “Vs 2019” compares the same calendar month (August 2019) for services already reporting then.

9 of the 13 services enter the series after it begins — visible in the data as nulls until their first reported day: KTMB ETS, KTM Komuter Utara and KTM Intercity (October 2020); Rapid Bus (KL), Rapid Bus (Penang) and Rapid Bus (Kuantan) (January 2022); MRT Putrajaya Line and KTM Shuttle Tebrau (June 2022); KTM Komuter (September 2023). The data says when reporting begins, not when a line opened — the two can differ, so this page claims only the first.

Rapid Bus (Kuantan) has reported zero trips since 15 December 2025 — a reported zero, which is data, not a gap in the feed.

Deep data

03.3

A trip is not a passenger.

One person riding a Rapid bus to the LRT and changing to the MRT is three trips in this feed. Ridership measures how hard the network works, not how many people use it — the distinction sits under every number on this page.

Trips, not people

Every transfer adds a trip, so the headline overstates unique riders by design. That makes the series excellent for load and trend, and wrong for questions like how many Malaysians ride transit.

What this feed covers

10 rail services — LRT, MRT, the Monorail and KTM's network — plus Rapid buses in KL, Penang and Kuantan. Private cars, motorcycles, taxis and e-hailing, school and factory buses, and other operators' services are not in this dataset, so nothing here describes them.

The 2019 baseline is narrow

Only 4 services report from the start — LRT Kelana Jaya Line, LRT Ampang Line, MRT Kajang Line and Monorail Line. Every vs-2019 figure on this page compares those services alone; the rest of the network simply has no 2019 in this data.

Ridership is demand meeting supply — the tracks, roads and stations it runs on live in Infrastructure, and what the fare means against a household budget lives in Cost of Living.
